How to remove pauses from a recording

  1. Open an MP3 or WAV file. The tool measures your recording and highlights every pause longer than the minimum in red.
  2. Pick a sensitivity. Normal suits most speech. Use Gentle for natural, conversational audio and Aggressive for a tight, fast-paced result.
  3. Preview the result. Use Hear next to any cut in the list to check that no quiet words are lost, and untick or remove cuts you want to keep.
  4. Add your own cuts if needed, such as a cough or a false start, by dragging across the waveform.
  5. Choose MP3 or WAV and prepare the download.

What the settings do

SettingWhat it controlsTip
Silence thresholdHow quiet a moment must be to count as a pause, in decibels below full scaleRaise it (towards −20) if pauses are missed in a noisy room. Lower it if soft words are being cut.
Minimum pauseOnly pauses longer than this are shortened0.8 s keeps natural rhythm. 0.5 s removes more hesitation.
Keep this muchHow long each pause becomes after shortening0.3–0.5 s sounds natural. Very short values sound rushed.

The threshold is set automatically from your recording's background level and speech level, so most files work without changes. Every cut gets a tiny fade at each side, so joins do not click.

Frequently asked questions

Will it cut quiet words?

It can if the threshold is too high or a word is very soft. That is why every cut is shown on the waveform and in the list. Lower the threshold or use the Gentle setting, and check with Hear.

Does it remove background noise?

No. It shortens pauses. Hiss under the speech stays. In a noisy recording, pauses still contain the noise, so the threshold needs to sit just above the noise level.

Is my audio uploaded?

No. Detection, editing and encoding all happen in your browser. Closing the page clears everything.

Can I cut other parts too?

Yes. Drag across the waveform to add a manual cut, or use the cut out sections tool, which starts with manual cuts.
